SoSe 13: Statistical Reasoning: An Introduction

In this course students will learn basic statistical techniques that are among the most useful methodological tools used in all applied fields of social science. The goal is to enable students to interpret statistical results reported in empirical economic and social research.
Topics covered include descriptive statistics such as averages and measures of dispersion, correlation as well as basic regression analysis and hypothesis testing. Because of the applied nature of the course, there will be less emphasis on formal mathematical argument and greater emphasis on the use of tables, data graphing and the careful verbal expression of the fundamental statistical concepts.
