SoSe 13: Theories of Globalization
Theresa Kuhn-Lancee
Comments
Over the past few decades, we have witnessed a rapid growth of economic, political and social cross-border interconnectedness. A number of conceptual approaches, such as globalization, transnationalization and Europeanization, aim at capturing this phenomenon. However, there is no consensus as to the scope and socio-economic impact of these transformations, and some even argue that there is nothing new to them.
This seminar examines various theoretical approaches to study globalization. After discussing the causes and dimensions of globalization, we focus on its economic and societal impact, and ask whether or not globalization has led to economic and social convergence across countries. To this end, we compare, amongst others, the arguments of modernization theory, dependency theory, world system’s theory, and Huntington’s clash of civilization. We also discuss how to study and measure globalization empirically. Special emphasis will be placed on Europe, where global processes of integration are accompanied by Europeanization. close
