Postcolonial Studies has emerged as a productive theoretical response to the complex relationship between colonial discourse and the social, political and cultural formation of colonial and formerly colonial societies. Taking Edward Said's Orientalism as a point of departure, the seminar examines the genesis of postcolonial studies. This interdisciplinary seminar also deals with various forms of imperial practice in British, German, and Ottoman imperial contexts. We inquire into the representation of the colonial subject and the intersections of class, race, gender, and colonialism/imperialism. Discussing concepts of mimicry, hybridity, and transculturation, we will gain insight into the mechanisms of empire. close
