SoSe 13: Studying the Present Moment-T-5 LP:Social Movement Theory, the Labour Movements and the Green Movements
Verity Burgmann
Comments
In the past fifty years, scholars of social movements have developed theoretical models to explain the rationale of social movements, the circumstances under which they succeed and their impacts. Scholars such as Jürgen Habermas, Claus Offe and Alain Touraine have also proposed an analytical distinction between 'old' social movements based on the working-class and the 'new' social movements that emerged strongly from the 1960s. This subject explores the major debates in social movement theory and investigates the usefulness of the distinction made between 'old' working-class based movements and 'new' social movements by focussing on case-studies of both an 'old' social movement and a 'new' social movement: the Australian labour movement and the Australian green movement. close
