Aims and Objectives
This tutorial is designed to accompany students as they work on two long translations (2500 words each), one prose and one poetry or drama, with strategy statements and explanatory notes. The course will be structured partly as small tutorials, where each student will get in-depth feedback on his or her translation work, and partly as workshop sessions, where students' work will be analysed and discussed by the group. Students will be expected to improve their translations on the basis of the feedback they receive.
Learning Outcomes
During the module, students will learn:- to hone the skills developed un Tutorial I. These include close reading, text analysis, advanced translation skills and decision-making based on a complex range of linguistic and literary factors, enabling students to make informed decisions on matters of detail and to use language both accurately and creatively.
- to develop high level of linguistic proficiency in English, paying particular attention to linguistic accuracy as well as sensitivity to style and register
- to read and assess literary texts incisively, paying attention to detail, developing strategic decision-making skills
- to make use of various resources and dictionaries
Module Requirements
This unit may only be taken by students who have already completed Literary Translation Tutorial I.
The basic requirements for gaining 10 credit points are: the completion of 5000 words of translation work in poetry and prose, and regular attendance in the course, including active participation in all workshop discussions.
Language requirementsThe course will be held in English. Students must have an active command of sophisticated, near native-speaker language skills (C1 / C2).
