Comments
This module will analyse the language of contemporary British cultural phenomena as a means of understanding the cultural diversity and social structures in contemporary Britain today.
In Tutorial II, we will analyse a range of British cultural forms such as cinema, television, pop music, football, food, drinking, with the focus on language as a tool to express various forms of cultural identity such as nationality, class, gender and ethnicity. As well as analysing a range of contemporary writing (novels, newspapers, magazines, song lyrics), the course will also analyse visual media such as films and television.
Learning OutcomesDuring the module, students will learn:

- to analyse a variety of media forms: newspaper texts, films, television, song lyrics, political speeches

The tutorial will build on the knowledge gained in Tutorial I, and therefore participation in Tutorial I is a requirement for participation in this part of the module. To gain 5 credits from Tutorial II, students will be required to give a detailed presentation on one aspect of contemporary British culture, which will then be written up into a 2500 word case study, and to take part in all class activities such as discussions and exercises.
