Unter anderem ausgehend von der Grundthese "that reality is socially constructed" (P. L. Berger/Th. Luckmann: The Social Construction of Re4ality. A Treatise in the Sociology of Knowledge. Doubleday 1967), versucht das Seminar einige Aspekte der Darstellungen/ Inszenierungen gesellschaftlicher Phänomene im Fernsehen (Soap-Serien, Ratespiele, Nachrichten, Dokumentationen, Talkshows und in gewissem Maße im Internet (kritisch) zu beleuchten. Folgende Beobachtungen weisen auf zu diskutierende Problemfelder: Die Bezeichnung Medienereignis (media event) deutet an, so John Fiske, dass in einer "postmodern world we can no longer rely on a stable relationship or clear distinction between a 'real' event and its mediated representation. A media event, then, is not a mere representation of what happened, but it has its own reality, which gathers up into itself the reality of the event that may or may not have preceded it" (Fiske, John. Media Matters. Race and Gender in U.S. Politics. Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press, 1996, S. 2); 2004 bemerkte Arundathi Roy: "It's important to understand that the corporate media doesn't just support the neo-liberal project. It is the neo-liberal project. This is not a moral position it has chosen to take, it's structural. It's intrinsic to the economics of how the mass media works. Most nations have adequately hideous family secrets. So it isn't often necessary for the media to lie. It's all in the editing - what's emphasized and what's ignored." (Roy, Arundhati: An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire. South End Press Cambridge, Mass. 2004, S. 56f., 84f.); die Herrschaft der Ware, so 2006 der Historiker Canfora, ist zum Kult der Ware geworden, und dieser Kult erschafft täglich den Kult des Reichtums und festigt ihn langfristig. Die ungeheure Menge an Sendungen, die einzig und allein der Warenwerbung dienen, ist der Hauptinhalt der gigantischen 'Fernsehmaschine'. Diese neuartige Meinungsmache ist unwiderstehlich, manifestiert sich nie direkt politisch, hat aus dem Scheitern explizit propagandistischer "Gehirnwäsche" gelernt. Die unterschwellige Methode bietet eine elementare, wenn nicht infantile Option an: mehr Waren ist gleich mehr Glück. Es bedarf gar keines Orwellschen ‚big brother' mehr. Die Werbestrategen sind die wahren und auf ihre Weise genialen ‚organischen Intellektuellen' der siegreichen Diktatur des Reichtums. (Canfora, Luciano: Eine kurze Geschichte der Demokratie.
