SoSe 13: The Folk Bible Part b
Florentina Badalanova Geller
Additional information / Pre-requisites
The course will be taught in English.
Comments
The course will offer a survey of vernacular commentaries on Biblical narratives and will examine related oral tradition, ritual, religious art and material culture. The analysis of this complex data will show how the scriptural corpus was continually subjected to re-interpretation and re-telling and how some oral renditions of biblical themes can be traced back to apocryphal writings, Midrash and patristic tradition (Church Fathers). The relationship between the Folk Bible corpus and vernacular Koranic tradition will be featured as well. The course will reflect the results of anthropological field research in various ethnic contexts, in translation. The course is designed from an interdisciplinary perspective. close
