Comments
The course will offer a survey and text readings of some apocryphal (para-Biblical) narratives which survived in Church Slavonic. These texts will show how scriptural tradition was continually subjected to re-interpretation and re-telling. Some of these apocryphal texts were originally composed in Hebrew or Aramaic, others in Greek, later transmitted in the Byzantine Commonwealth via the last lingua sacra of Europe, Old Church Slavonic. Nevertheless, some of these apocryphal texts appear to be indigenous cultural products. Sources for discussion include The Book of the Secrets of Enoch, The Sea of Tiberias, The Contest Between Michael and Satanael, The Life of Adam and Eve, The Apocalypse of Abraham, The Apocalypse of Baruch, The Ladder of Jacob, Protevangelium of James, Apocryphal Gospels, etc. Visual data will also be utilised.
The course will be taught in English. close
