Comments

This seminar examines the cultural processes of modern China through new understandings of Chinese literary productions and receptions in Greater China. We investigate how Chinese literature engages, directly and indirectly, in the modernization of China in the 20th century and beyond. Topics include: Mandarin Ducks and Butterflies and the rise of popular periodicals, May Fourth Literature and the imagination of New China, "Revolution and Love" novels and urban culture of the 1930s, diaspora literature and the Cultural Cold War, eight revolutionary model operas and gender politics, Taiwan nativist literature and Taiwan Localization Movement, Mo Yan and China's "Nobel Complex". The course guides students to ask how Chinese literary and aesthetic modernity come into being in the 20th century and how Chinese literature corresponds to the modernization, colonialism and globalization in Greater China in its own ways. close
