Comments

A traditional question of art theory is how artists produce, appropriate and transmit knowledge. However, in recent years, ‚artistic knowledge' and associated notions such as ‚artistic research' have come to the foreground in debates on the doctorate in the arts. These research policy issues have inspired another more theoretically inclined approach to the question of artistic knowledge, which often borrows insights and concepts from the history of science. Remarkably, there has been limited attempts to connect these recent policy debates to historical scholarship on art and art theory. This colloquium thus deals with the question of ‚artistic knowledge' in an integrated historical and theoretical way. The colloquium consists of four sessions, and each session consist of a master class directed by an external guest speaker in collaboration with Sven Dupré. This master class is in preparation of a lecture by the external guest speaker during the same session. The external guest speakers are Glenn Adamson (Victoria and Albert Museum, London) on 3 May, Joanna Woodall (The Courtauld Institute of Art, London) on 31 May, Alexander Marr (University of Cambridge) on 14 June, and Tanja Michalsky (Universität der Künste, Berlin) on 21 June 2013. Doctoral and master students have the opportunity to present and discuss their work during the sessions. For students interested in presenting their research work the introductory session on 26 April is obligatory. close
