SoSe 14: S-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: The Virgin Queen on Screen

More than 400 years after her death, the fascination with Queen Elizabeth I (reigned 1558-1603), the 'Virgin Queen', has not ceased. She has been re-imagined in literature, painting and film - as warrior queen, ruthless opponent of Mary Queen of Scots, or unhappy lover. The seminar will focus on the ways in which Queen Elizabeth has been adapted to the screen, from Sarah Bernhardt's 'silent' Elizabeth of 1912 to Helen Mirren's queen in the BBC miniseries of 2005. We will study continuities and historical changes in Queen Elizabeth's afterlife on the silver screen, paying particular attention to the visual representation of the queen as well as to concepts of female rule, stories about love and sexuality, and the role of the Virgin Queen in cultural memory.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance, active participation in classroom activities, and an essay of about 2000 words.
Language: The course will be taught in English (level C1).
Screenings: Please note that the films we will discuss in class will be screened after the seminar, i.e. on c. 7-8 Tuesdays (18-20) during the semester. Attendance is mandatory!
