SoSe 14: S-Modernity and Alterity in the Literatures of Medieval Britain II: Geoffrey Chaucer and his Dream Visions
Klaus Dietz
Kommentar
Dream visions have a long literary tradition dating back to classical antiquity. In medieval English and French literatures they represent a genre of its own. Chaucer's dream-vision poetry comprises several texts: The Book of the Duchess (one of his early works), The House of Fame, The Parliament of Fowls>/i> and the prologue to The Legend of Good Women. The course will centre on the first three works. The program will start with a general introduction, go on with reading selected parts of the texts and continue with Chaucer's treatment of the genre, the literary analysis of his relevant works and the discussion of his mostly French sources. At the beginning the participants will get a bibliography containing the relevant literature.
