This class will be concerned with major trends in Anglo-American literary theory of the twentieth century and today. It is organised around specific theoretical paradigms, and in each case we will work through the selected reading in order to see how it determines or defines the work of art and the task of literary interpretation; second, to assess the limitations and advantages of each particular approach, and finally, to trace in how far the emergence of subsequent theoretical paradigms respond to the achievements and shortcomings of what preceded them. The aim of this course is to enable students to gain a wider understanding of literary theory and to develop their own critical position.
A reader will be made available at the beginning of the semester. Additional reading will be: David Lodge/Nigel Wood, eds: Modern Criticism and Theory: A Reader. Harlow: Longman, Third Edition 2008. Tilmann Köppe, Simone Winko, eds. Neuere Literaturtheorien. Stuttgart: Metzler, 2008.This class will be concerned with major trends in Anglo-American literary theory of the twentieth century and today.
