SoSe 14: S-Historical Linguistics: History of English II
Martin Konvicka
Kommentar
In this course, we will discuss the internal and external history of the English language from its prehistory to the present day. We will begin with the developments during the Migration Period that lead to the settlements of the Germanic tribes on the British Isles and then we will follow the evolution of the emerging English language up until today. The concrete examples of language change in English on different levels of linguistic analysis, i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics and lexicology, will be linked with a more general discussion of the basic principles of language change. Furthermore, the situation in English will be brought into connection with the developments in other Germanic languages.
Credit requirements are regular attendance, active participation in discussions, a short presentation and an academic paper at the end of the semester.
