SoSe 14: The US and the "Global War on Terror"

This course examines the "global war on terror" (GWOT), understood broadly as the US’ response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It begins with a critical discussion of the questions: what is "terror", what is "war", and what is the "war on terror"? It then investigates the origins, development, and consequences of the GWOT from a range of perspectives. We will critically engage with issues such as: the status of international law, rendition and detention, the use of torture, drone warfare, the costs of war, the consequences of the GWOT for civil liberties, and the racial and gendered nature of the GWOT.
