SoSe 14: Political Thought in Classical Islam
José Ignacio Sánchez Sánchez
Kommentar
The objective of this course is to explore the different discourses on government and society in Classical Islam. The classes will be focused on the close reading and discussion of a variety of Arabic sources addressing topics such as the reception of the Greek tradition, the influence of Persian advice literature, the polemics on the origins and dispensability of the imamate, and the differences between religious and non-religious authority.
The proposed readings include the apocryphal letters of Aristotle to Alexander the Great, mirrors for princes, and texts concerning early polemics on the imamate and the nature of Islamic government, with special attention to al-Jahiz's treatises on this topic.
