In recent years, the Middle East has become one of the most debated regions in the world. For decades, it has been negatively portrayed in Western media. Yet the Middle East is no coherent entity, but a vast region of diverse peoples, religions, ethnicities, economies and political units.
This Seminar will introduce the students to the region through a wide variety of historical and ethnographic material to cover gender roles, Bedouin settlements, kinship relations, religious beliefs, social, economic and political structure as well as contemporary problems and transformations. The cultural diversity of the lived experience of the peoples of the region will receive a special attention.
The seminar is designed to give students anthropological insights into the cultures of the Middle East and North Africa through critical analysis and discussion of ethnography and other genres, including literary work, films, media representations and correspondence with Middle Eastern students.
