SoSe 14: Literature and Violence
Hector Abad Faciolince
Comments
In this course we will examine the description and analysis of violence in different types of texts: fiction, testimony, poetry, journalism and essays. From the Iliad as a description of wars and battles to a newspaper article from anywhere in the world today - the subject is seemingly infinite and the comprehensive coverage of it is not intended.
Regarding the theory of violence, I propose one theoretical text from sociobiology by Steven Pinker The Better Angels of our Nature and The Robber of Memories by Michael Jacobs.
In the field of fiction, I propose several short stories by Juan Rulfo from "The Plain in Flames", "Chronicle of a Death Foretold'" by García Márquez "Flight without End" by Joseph Roth and Disgrace by JM Coetzee.
We will read a few poems dealing with violence as well: Paul Celan, Antonio Machado and César Vallejo. Celan's poem will be approached as an exercise of translation.
The seminar includes writing a paper, which will be creative writing: the students will be asked to recall, describe or discuss a violent episode of their lives. This paper will use the tools of fiction, eyewitness account, journalistic chronicle or poetry. The focus here is the relationship between memory and violence, and its description to avoid further violence.
The course will be held in Spanish (including English and Italian texts, and a German translation).
