SoSe 14: S-Introduction to Cultural Studies II: The Making of the English Literary Canon
Eike Kronshage
Comments
Reading the canon. The seminar investigates the meaning of that simple sentence
by asking what "reading" and "canon" mean. We will discuss the idea of the "classic"
(Eliot, Coetzee) with all its political implications (Bloom); the idea of reading (Iser),
distant reading (Moretti), and not-reading (Bayard); as well as ideas of the canon in
relation to "formula fiction" (Benjamin), the relationship between canons of national
literature and Weltliteratur (Goethe, Birus), and the formation of the canon in the
digital age.
N.B. Two texts on the syllabus are in German and there is no translation available. All participating students must (!) have (at least) passive skills in German and be able to work through challenging theoretical texts like those of Walter Benjamin.
