This course introduces students to the concept of ekphrasis - the "verbal representation of visual representation" - in particular and to text-image relations in general. In the Western philosophical tradition, text and image have typically been conceived as binary opposites: texts tell, images show; texts are temporal, images spatial; texts are linear, images non-linear; texts use arbitrary signs, images motivated signs; texts are male, images female. In ekphrasis, these seemingly incompatible systems of representation meet as one medium tries to represent the other one. The relationship between them thus becomes a site of negotiation and contention. In order to explore these issues, we will read ekphrastic poetry and prose (excerpts) from the Renaissance to the present along with a broad range of criticism and theory.
Participants will have to meet the standard requirements: regular attendance, response papers and a presentation are obligatory, credits can be obtained by submitting a term paper.
All required reading will be available on Blackboard.
