SoSe 14: (GEND) Pre- and Post-Colonial Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Africa

This seminar will be in two parts. The first part will seek to examine the pre-colonial sexual identity in Africa. This will look at what makes up African sexual orientation and gender identity.
The session will look at many researches and papers and evaluate the authenticity of them.
The second part of the class will look at postcolonial sexual orientation and gender identity of Africans with the aim of looking at what role the following played, is playing and will play in the role of decriminalisation of same sex relationship on the continent.
1. Colonial influence; law, beliefs, principles and history
2. Religion: Both colonial and post colonial religious movement on the continent including; Christianity, Islam, Traditional religion and others
3. Globalisation- LGBT identity, Traditional Values, UN, WHO, etc
4. Politics and politicians
5. Role of social media and the mainstream media.
