SoSe 14: Violence in the USA
Anne Nassauer
Comments
Rates of violence in the United States far exceed those of other industrialized nations. Violence plays a crucial role for the US American value system and culture. The first part of the class “Violence in the United States” will impart the major theoretical debates in violence research and discuss advantages of micro- and macro-sociological approaches to understand violence. The second part of the seminar will focus on different empirical examples and various types of violence in the United States: from interpersonal violence to protest violence, from massacres during the Vietnam War to U.S. school rampages. During the sessions the usefulness of theoretical approaches for explaining different types of violence will be discussed and applied.
This seminar addresses Bachelor students in their 3rd and 4th semester with a focus in sociology. The first session will take place on April 25th. Please register for the class on Blackboard until April 14th.
