SoSe 14: Politics of Lebanon

This course is designed to provide an introduction to the politics of Lebanon examining the development of state and society in modern Lebanon and engaging with issues and themes relevant to the country's politics and history. In addition to providing students with knowledge specific to the evolution and workings of the Lebanese political system, the course introduces students to issues and themes useful for comparative purposes. In doing so, this course will tackle topics including the development of state-society relations in colonial and postcolonial societies, political economy of development, state and society in conflict and postconflict contexts, political violence in crisis and non-crisis situations, and consociational democracy.
The working language of this module is English and previous knowledge of the Middle East and Middle Eastern politics is desirable.
