Martina Schmid
Information for students
The seminar is particularly laid out for master students but also invites interested PhD students. Requirements for successful participation are presentations and an active participation in the discussions.

The seminar will cover advanced topics in optics with a particular attention to micro- and nanooptics.
In recent years huge progress has been made in micro- and nano-fabrication bringing related technologies to the market. Many efforts are on microelectronics but also optics make a significant contribution. Developments in the field have opened the path to modern lightening and displays, custom illumination profiles, high performance anti-reflective coatings, mobile communications, modern medical diagnostics (e.g. endoscopes), optical switches and sensors, and many more.
The ongoing trend towards miniaturization also applies to the optics. Moving from micro- to nanometer-sized optics we furthermore cross the limit of classical description and open the view beyond the diffraction limit. Examples for areas of the students’ presentations in the seminar are: microlenses, optical imaging, holography, Fresnel lenses, gratings, tuneable microoptics, thin film optics, waveguides, integrated optics, plasmonics, photonic crystals and metamaterials. The scope goes from physical principles to practical examples and recent research results.
