SoSe 14: Gender and Forced Migration in the Middle East

Jolie Chai

Comments

This course will examine gender and international forced migration within the current context of the Middle East. An overview of the basic legal frameworks will develop a practical understanding of the international protection response to forced migration with an emphasis on gender issues. This overview will be complemented by a thematic focus on the particular situation of women and children, lesbian gay bisexual transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons, displaced men, and incidents of sexual and gender based violence in conflict zones. In addition to lectures and working groups, case studies drawn from the current situation in the Middle East will provide insights into the challenges of recognizing and respecting gender based needs in situations of forcible displacement. Please note that knowledge of gender studies, including feminist theory, is not a requirement for this course as a practical perspective will be emphasized. close
