SoSe 14: History of Emotions goes global

Benno Gammerl und Margrit Pernau

Comments

Emotions are culturally specific. These changes pertain not only to norms and rules, but also to the way the emotions are expressed and experienced. Therefore actors have to learn the emotion codes of their society; they have to learn to read emotions and to feel in a socially appropriate way.
This social constructionist model, which has been predominate in emotion history and anthropology for at least the last two decades is convincing as far as it goes, but it raises new questions on communicating (with) emotions. Even within one society, at one point in history, this communication cannot be taken for granted. On the other hand, communication of some sort seems to be possible even between members of widely differing societies - not always successful in the first instance, but opening up to transcultural learning processes.
The seminar will explore these issues by bringing together approaches from the history of emotions and global history. In a first part we will read some of the canonical texts in emotion history and anthropology. In the second part we will address the problem how emotional mis/understandings relate to spatial dis/connections and constellations on a global level; the third part will address the role of translating emotions between cultural settings, both at the micro as well as at the macro level. close
