The Samaritans are a religious and ethnic community. With Jewish groups they have in common the Pentateuch, but they deny the divine status of all other books of the Old Testament. A speciality of the Samaritans is their clinging to ancient customs, e.g. the slaughtering of Pesach sacrifice, the High Priest and their religious centre on Mount Garizim near Nablus, old Shechem. Like the Jewish communities of Rabbanites and Karaites in Medieval times the Samaritans used the Arabic language, but in the special form of Middle Arabic which was used by non-Muslim communities. - Specimen of Samaritan-Arabic texts will be read in class. By using manuscripts, problems of critical edition and other philological problems will be discussed.
Text materials will be send to participants as PDF files.
For participants of advanced level because texts are written in so called Middle Arabic a special form of Arabic used by non-Muslim communities.
