SoSe 15: Political issues of contemporary South Asia

Antìa Mato Bouzas

Comments

The course seeks to provide an understanding of political developments -with a focus on security issues- of modern South Asia. The course is designed for MA students with a conceptual knowledge in the field of political science, international relations or other related social science disciplines who wish to acquire some regional expertise. For this purpose, theoretical aspects concerning definitions of region, state building in postcolonial societies, national identity and world order will be discussed with a reference to the South Asian context. India and Pakistan, as the main regional actors, will receive special attention but main developments in other South Asian countries will be also examined. Since South Asia is one of the world's conflict-prone zones, the course will look into some of these conflicts, particularly the Kashmir dispute, as a way to scrutinise the complex relation between state, community and identity in the region. close
