SoSe 15: V-Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English I
Ferdinand von Mengden / Kirsten Middeke
Comments
This lecture will introduce you to sociolinguistics as a specific way of looking at language(s) in general and to varieties of English in particular. Sociolinguistics is all about viewing language as one aspect of human social behaviour. Rather than divorcing language from its speakers and studying it as a self-contained system, sociolinguists are interested in the linguistic variation caused by such social variables as geography, ethnicity, social class, gender and age. This of course has consequences on our understanding of norms and standards, rules and exceptions, correct and false.
The lecture will provide the background knowledge enabling students to take on an informed and critical position towards linguistic norms and variation. It will also leave room for discussion.
