SoSe 15: AS Levels of Linguistic Analysis II: Syllable Structure in English

Renate Raffelsiefen

Comments

Phonology is concerned with the question of how meanings can be distinguished through phonological form. This potential is described in terms of an inventory of fundamental building blocks (so-called "phonemes") and rules for combining these into words. In this course we will investigate how constraints on syllable structure restrict the possible phoneme combinations in English. In particular, we will focus on high vowels and their distribution in RP and General American. Apart from serving as an introduction to phonological theory, this course also aims at clarifying the notion of possible word in English. Participants should contact me by e-mail (raffelsiefen@ids-mannheim.de) for the reading material. It is expected that the material has been read thoroughly by the beginning of the course. The course will be taught in English. close
