SoSe 15: S-Culture-Gender-Media II: "The Stage of History: Shakespeare's History Plays"
Stephan Laqué
Comments
Far from being lessons in English history, Shakespeare's history plays are fascinating metatheatrical and metahistoriographical reflections on the power of theatrical representation as well as on the nature of history, of its constructedness and transmission. This course will examine a selection of Shakespeare's history plays in terms of genre and of the close interrelation between the theatre and history.
Please purchase either individual editions of Richard II, Henry IV (1+2), Henry V and Richard III (preferably from the Arden Shakespeare Series), the Norton Shakespeare: Histories or The Norton Shakespeare (ed. Stephen Greenblatt). Please read Richard II before the start of the semester.
