SoSe 15: International Development Cooperation as Professional Career?

The objective of the seminar is to qualify the students for a professional career in international development cooperation. For this purpose the seminar will provide application oriented knowledge about most relevant approaches, issues and actors in this field. This includes an overview about globalization and developing countries, poverty and inequality and the current discourse regarding Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)/ Green Economy.
To understand the functioning of international development cooperation institutions a focus will be on the following actors:
-Multilateral, regional and bilateral Organizations
-"Emerging Countries" as global partners in development cooperation
-Private Actors/ Multinational Enterprises
-Civil Society Organizations.
On the basis of various country case studies (e.g. India, Vietnam, South Africa) development projects/programmes in selected sectors (i.e. poverty reduction, green economy, good governance) will be analyzed.
With this state of knowledge achieved, it is intended to make practical challenges in development cooperation transparent within a comprehensive simulation game.
Additionally students in this course will benefit from:
-Discussions with invited high-level experts for specific topics,
-relevant information and support to identify traineeships in development cooperation institutions.
A selected bibliography, including documents will be posted onto "Blackboard" at a later date.
