SoSe 15: Introduction to Globalization
Pieter De Wilde
Comments
This course aims at providing bachelor students in political science (especially those interested in international relations and/or political sociology) a comprehensive overview of globalization as process that affects politics in many fundamental ways. The course starts with a conceptual and theoretical discussion about what globalization is, what is driving it, and how "new" it is. Then we discuss empirical manifestations and degrees of economic, political and cultural globalization. Finally, we briefly reflect on implications of globalization for democracy and discuss alternative visions on globalization. Students will thus leave the course with a broad substantial overview of the various dimensions of globalization, including basic facts about policy fields such as migration, trade, human rights and climate change. They will also leave the course with expanded conceptual, theoretical and critical skills to understand such a complex social phenomenon as globalization. close
