SoSe 15: Russia and the Rest: The Evolution of Russia's relations with the EU, the US, and Its Neighborhood
Nelli Babayan
Comments
Russia has long been one of the main international actors, while its relations with its neighbours and the international community have always been fluctuating. Yet, since the annexation of Crimea and the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Russia has been under constant international attention. Its recent actions have made Russia one of the main antagonists in the international affairs and have drawn criticism from both states and international organizations. This course provides close examination of Russian foreign and domestic politics since the break-up of the Soviet Union up until present days. The main focus of this course is, however, on understanding the evolution of Russia's foreign policy by examining the regime, ideology, and strategic interests of the Russian state juxtaposed with the interests the European Union, the United States, and Russia's immediate neighbours. Since most of the students hear about Russia from Western media, we will also discuss the narratives presented in Russian media and online social networks. Knowledge of the Russian language is not necessary for course participation, since all lectures and readings will be in English. The course will feature short lectures, student presentations, and active class interaction. Students should be prepared to hand in written assignments (to be discussed at the first meeting) and submit a term paper at the end of the course on the topic of their choosing that is relevant to the issues discussed in class. close
