This course explores the history of efforts to develop forms of artistic work that engaged broad audiences of citizens and consumers. We will examine a range of enterprises, including monuments, murals, animated cartoons, propaganda, and the Web. Drawing on perspectives from art history, social history, and cultural studies, the course considers developments throughout the twentieth century in the United States such as urbanization, political and business expansion, class and racial conflict, war, and technological innovation in relation to art work. close
