This course investigates the Asian American perspective in the history of the United States, in the early twentieth century. Its purpose is to assess the changes and continuities in the role and impact of this particular ethnic minority in the context of U.S. society, culture, economy as well as transpacific relation. To this end, we shall examine primary sources drawn from newspapers, novels, governmental records, look both at traditional questions related to immigration and integration as well as more recent approaches to the study of the ethnic experience including gender, race, culture, and ideology. Select essays for this class will be drawn from Lon Kurashige and Alice Yang Murray, Major Problems in Asian American History (Boston: Wadsworth Cengage Learning 2003). To meet the requirements for the class (pass), students should participate regularly in class (no more than 2 no-shows), read and discuss actively all texts (20-30 pp. per week), submit questions in writing, work in groups, write several response papers, and give one presentation in class. close
