Advanced Seminar
SoSe 15: From Homestead to Wisconsin: Organized Labor and Social Movements in the 20th Century
Philipp Reick
Comments
In this seminar we will explore watershed moments in the history of organized labor and social movements from the late 19th to the early 21st century. Drawing on theories provided by the social sciences, we will analyze the emergence of trade unions and social movements and discuss the conditions for their success and failure. With help of insights from cultural studies, we will assess the meaning of race and gender in 20th century labor relations and investigate the trajectory of new social movements. The seminar will pay careful attention to the similarities and peculiarities of US social history in relation to other industrial societies. In particular, we will scrutinize Werner Sombart’s famous question ‘why there was no socialism in the US’ (1906) and compare US and non-US models of social resistance and organization. In so doing, we will also integrate recent approaches in transfer and entanglement studies. close
