SoSe 15: From Japanese to U.S. Imperialism? Encounters in the Asia Pacific, 19th -21st Century
Nadin Heé
Comments
Asia Pacific is a term often mentioned in recent international news - be it in an economic context when talking about the rise of Asia in the 21st Century or when talking about territorial disputes in South and East Asian waters. Especially in the latter context, it is often historical legacies that are referred to.
But what exactly is the (Asia) Pacific and who is part of it? Did it change over the centuries and is the Pacific a colonial or postcolonial realm? What methodologies and approaches will best suit research to fashioning histories of encounters? Using these questions as an entry point, this seminar will also discuss possible conceptualizations of the area, and will map some of multiple narratives, ranging from the production of colonial knowledge to nuclear tests in the region. With a combination of secondary literature, primary sources, as well as a book presentation on each case study, we will develop possible narratives and discuss different methodological and theoretical approaches with their pros and cons.
