SoSe 15: Social Cognitive Neuroscience

Human beings are social animals. We evolved in social groups, and therefore, our brains are wired to interact with others and behave accordingly in social situations. Over the last 15 years, neuroscientists have used functional magnetic resonance imaging to ask questions about the neural processing involved in human social behaviors. This course, Social Cognitive Neuroscience, will survey this research. Students will read and present scientific studies that asked the following questions and more: How do we understand the intentions of others? What process in the brain underlies prosocial behaviors, such as giving to charity? When making decisions, how do other people influence us? Is sharing information about ourselves with others rewarding? Students will not only read these studies, but they will be educated on the methodology and different types of relevant analyses in the field. Finally, students will critically discuss the usefulness of this field of research. close
