SoSe 15: Art and Nationalism in the Modern Middle East

This course will examine the shift from local modes of aesthetic production towards global modes of artistic production from the eighteenth century to the contemporary period in the Middle East. Students will research the relationship between modern art and the construction of nationalist identities in the twentieth century. They will also be able to discuss shifts towards globalization and markets and the breakdown of nationalized art of the contemporary period. The course will begin with collective readings for the first month, and culminate with student presentations. close
