The course will offer a survey of parabiblical (apocryphal and pseudepigraphic) narratives, in translation. These texts will show how scriptural tradition was continually subjected to re-interpretation and re-telling. Examples of sources to be discussed are The Book of Jubilees, The Life of Adam and Eve, The Legend of the Sea of Tiberias, The Legend of the Combat Between Michael and Satanael, The Apocalypse of Enoch, The Apocalypse of Baruch, Protevangelium of James, Apocryphal Gospels, The Apocalypse of the Virgin Mary, The Sacred Book of the Bogomils, etc. The relationship between apocryphal and pseudepigraphic literature and oral tradition will be discussed as well. Parallels with Koranic narratives will be discussed likewise. Visual data will also be utilised. close
