SoSe 15: Alexander, Israsim and the others: Authorship in mediaeval scientific literature
Lucia Raggetti
Comments
Authorship and authority are two crucial questions in the transmission of scientific knowledge in the Middle Ages. Many materials were transmitted under the name of pseudo-authors, while authorial works were transmitted by fluid traditions. In this intellectual atmosphere, Fundlegende and frame tales attributing the text to a specific authority multiplied. A number of texts from different textual genres (astrology, alchemy, mineralogy, science of properties) will be presented and discussed in class. The Blockseminar will be the occasion for an intensive session of work on the primary sources.
