SoSe 16: Global Challenges and Institutions
Curd Benjamin Knüpfer
Kommentar
This MA-level seminar builds on the course “Theories of Press-State Relations,” taught at the JFKI last semester. Participants will be expected to come equipped with a basic understanding of discourse and public sphere theory, as well as a well-founded understanding of the notion of transnational flows of information. (Contact course instructor for syllabus of previous course). The content of the class will provide a more empirical and case-based approach to the topic of international politics and the role played by ideas and institutions. Specifically, we will look at the particular challenges posed by issues such as inequality in the global distribution of resources, climate change or the ongoing ‘War on Terror’: Will these contentious issues force states and publics to work together, or do they expose and amplify underlying rifts and competing interests? How do differences of perception and institutional interests play into the seeming political gridlock and vicious cycles, which cause these challenges to persist and intensify? Regular attendance and participation will be required, along with the careful preparation of all required readings and the submission of written text summaries throughout the semester. This basic workload will be expected for a “Teilnahme“ as well from students seeking to obtain a “Leistungsschein.” In addition, the latter will be expected to have worked on and submitted own research designs by the final session of the semester.
