Kommentar

The Jacksonian Period (1829-1837) has been dubbed „The Age of the Common Man” in the older literature. With the exception of the “Jeffersonian Period,” this epoch is the only one that carries the name of an American President. New research has shed a fresh light on the role of Andrew Jackson in American society and politics. It has questioned the overwhelming importance of the seventh president and has shown that the “common man” was on his ascent long before Jackson won his presidential election. The enfranchisement of male white voters without regard of their economic status, the development of a male-centered ideology of work and the home, the separation of the female and the male “spheres” and the emphasis on the importance of material production as self-employed artisan or yeoman (despite the wide-spread existence of wage labor and slavery) contributed to the rise of the ”common man”. At the same time, the forces of the market were unleashed, thereby transforming the hitherto agrarian United States into a market society depending on the exchange of products and services across long distances. This development was made possible by the internal improvements, which led to the Transportation Revolution. For a complete picture of the Jacksonian Period, it is mandatory therefore to understand the position of the “common (white) women,” of African Americans as well as Native Americans, all of whom were excluded from the ranks of the “common man.” Schließen
