What becomes of narrative when all of the ‘grand narratives’ of the past have been laid to waste? This seminar will introduce students to a selection of texts concerned with storytelling, narrative, and representation within a post-apocalyptic framework. The development of apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic sensibilities and tropes within the Anglophone world will be considered in an examination of contemporary texts that call upon and expand such ideas in order to interrogate contemporary anxieties and preoccupations. Over the course of the semester, students will examine fears of looming catastrophic events that seem to threaten the continued existence of human civilization (extreme climate change, pandemics, nuclear annihilation, etc.), as well as the idea that Modernity itself is already post-apocalyptic. In an era in which humanity has been described as having experienced an irreparable break with the traditions and structuring myths of the past, what role might storytelling – either as a means of transmitting the shared values deemed fundamental to the establishment of community, or as a site of community in and of itself – have to play in the struggle for survival?
