SoSe 16: State and Society in Indonesia
Eric Anton Heuser
Kommentar
This is a seminar in the anthropology of Indonesia. It seeks to enable students to: (1) gain an empirical and conceptual understanding of the socio-cultural and political dynamics in Indonesia; (2) think intersectionally about culture, politics, society, and religion across the Indonesian archipelago more generally; (3) address and debate theoretical questions in cultural anthropology through Indonesian materials. The focus of this course will be on socio-cultural process and politics in Indonesia, including the formation of the postcolonial nation state. This includes debates on culture politics, religion, gender, and local history. Readings have been chosen as introductions to the topics debated and should be regarded as start-offs for further discussion. Students are encouraged and required to do further independent literature research for presentations and term essays. The emphasis in this course pivots on understanding theoretical and conceptual issues that are anchored in the construction of Indonesian culture politics, but are pertinent to general anthropological and ethnographic debates in other regions of the world.
