Kommentar
This lecture is designed to present an overview of the main aspects of the social structures of EU countries. The focus will be on contemporary social structures within national societies. However, given the longevity of social cleavages, the lectures often link contemporary features to long-lasting cleavage structures in Europe. The lecture is split into three major parts: The introductory block starts with an intense discussion and recap of major concepts of social stratification. A selection of classical and modern approaches will be presented and discussed in class. The second block focuses on selected dimensions of the social structure, such as demographic development, household and family structures, educational systems, or the structure of the labour force. The third block presents empirical evidence of the most salient forms of social inequality inherent within and between European societies, such poverty and material deprivation, gender inequalities, or ethnic inequalities. The last session in the semester is devoted to the question whether we experience a trend towards a unified European society – both in terms of structural development and in terms of contemporary discussions.
