PLEASE NOTE: THIS COURSE WILL MEET IN ROOM A125 (not A124), KOSERSTR 20.
In this course we deal with 19th and 20th century prostitution from a global history perspective that is with a focus on how prostitution was embedded in and influenced by processes and structures of transnational contact, exchange and mobility. We discuss case studies that deal with prostitution and its regulation in settings of Empire and military occupation, examine how prostitution was connected to transnational movements such as trafficking, migration and tourism and look at how abolitionist movements embarked on transnational networks, institutions and strategies. The case studies serve as our basis to discuss to what extent research on prostitution can benefit from a global history perspective and to reflect how in its wake questions of gender, class and race hierarchies, of sexual othering and transnational institutional and economical networks become prominent features.
