SoSe 16: Heritage in a Global Perspective
Michael Facius
Kommentar
From debates about the reconstruction of the "Stadtschloss" in Berlin to the partial destruction of the ancient city of Palmyra by ISIS, conflicts surrounding monuments of cultural heritage seem to have multiplied in recent years. Simultaneously, academic interest in the global history of the concept and practice of heritage is on the rise. In this seminar, we will engage with the many interlinked dimensions of heritage in a global perspective: from its origins at the turn of the 19th century to the present, from the academic to the political, and from the theoretical approaches of memory studies to the practical concerns of heritage tourism and management. In pursuing these issues, the seminar is open to your interests and regional specialization: In the introductory block, we will not only establish a common framework, but formulate topics and case studies for the following sessions together.
